When did you know you wanted to do hair?
Growing up with three sisters made me want to learn to be a hairstylist. That meant I had a lot of practice before I even enrolled in cosmetology school. I started after high school graduation and having been doing it ever since. I feel very fortunate to have found a career at such a young age that I feel passionate about and truly love.
How would you describe your approach to doing hair color?
I like to look at someone and see what their current color is doing to their facial features. Everyone has a color they can wear to compliment their skin tone and enhance their best features. Depending on the desired look highlights can be a fun way to add shine and dimension to any single process color. I also like to do healthy hair-coloring. I do not do anything that sacrifices the integrity of the hair. I like to make sure my clients are also doing their part to care for the condition of their hair at home and prolong the color service.
What inspires your creativity?
I always like to look at passed decades and see them reinvented with today's styles. Most of the styles we see today are a modern twist of something that's been around for a long time. Also in keeping with the trends it's always fun to look at fashion and beauty magazines for inspiration. I have taken photography classes which are very useful when analyzing color, detail and symmetry in hair shapes. It's like my work of art and I get to have creative freedom.
What advice would you give someone considering coloring their hair for the first time?
People have this misconception that if you start coloring your hair you have to do it for the rest of your life, which I disagree with. There are many options with color that allow you to have a creative results without to much maintenance. If I have a color shy client, I start them with something subtle. In most cases people end up wanting, instead of having too do it for the rest of their lives.
Do you customize a hair color service for each and every client?
Absolutely, if I didn't we would all have cookie cutter hair-coloring. Everyone has such different characteristics that make them unique so you want to capture everyone's individuality by customizing what suits them best. Most importantly you want to have fun with it and be adventurous.
